Condition monitoring resolves the shortcomings of traditional maintenance by evaluating performance criteria, such as temperature change, wear rates, machine adjustments, force, pressure, defect rates, and vibration from rotating machinery. As a result, service intervals can be extended and scheduled to suit production operations. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, new and sophisticated methods of condition monitoring were developed, which employed high-technology instrumentation, smart sensors and knowledge-based analysis systems, due to the rapid growth of microchip technology. With the development of modern computerisation, condition monitoring has been applied in various industries during the last twenty years. This has enabled on-line machinery condition monitoring to practically become a reality. During machinery condition monitoring, various parameters can be measured such as vibration, acoustic emission, wear debris, noise, etc. These parameters indicate the conditions of machines in many ways. Vibration exists in machines even when they are operating under normal running conditions. Perfect machinery has not yet been produced and the vibration signature from a machine reveals a large amount of information about the machine's condition. Vibration has been proved to be one of the most effective parameters for machinery condition monitoring.
