摘要

In this paper, the authors present an overview of the implementation of non-linear imaging contrast microscopy techniques as novel, powerful diagnostic tools for cultural heritage (CH) studies. These high-resolution, non-destructive modalities are employed for the in-depth compositional identification and morphological characterisation of protective varnish layers, model multi-layer painted artworks and parchments. Furthermore, it is shown that non-linear measurements sensitive to the incident laser polarisation have the potential to provide valuable structural information on lining glues. Non-linear optical imaging is proposed as a new alternative tool that can act synergistically with other conventional techniques for the fast and reliable analysis of various CH objects in situ.
