When it comes to the inspection of paint layers, infrared and thermographic imaging are essential non-destructive tools in the art researcher's arsenal. The transparency of paint in the near infrared spectrum allows one to see the artists composition and how it was later altered. It also opens up a completely new field of authentication of artworks through the analysis of brush strokes and craquelure.
