GOP unable to get $50B plus-up for defense into infrastructure bill

The Senate voted 69-30 to pass a $1 trillion infrastructure bill, though a Republican push to include $50 billion in new defense-related spending was unsuccessful.A GOP-backed amendment to the bill that was never given a vote would have created a $50 billion "Defense Infrastructure Fund" with $25.35 billion for shipyards; $4 billion for test and training ranges; $2 billion for "high-priority" military construction projects; $1.5 billion for chemical remediation; $4 billion for facilities sustainment, restoration and modernization; $3.85 billion for Energy Department and National Nuclear Security Administration infrastructure; $4.5 billion for military depots;$2.5 billion for ammunition plants; and $2.5 billion for 5G technology installation at military bases.Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL), ranking member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, released a statement lamenting the lack of defense cash in the bill.
