The Defense Department will soon release a draft request for proposals seeking feedback on its fifth-generation wireless technology experimentation plans, as DOD wants to work with commercial industry to mitigate potential vulnerabilities in future 5G networks. Lisa Porter, deputy under secretary of defense for research and engineering, spoke about DOD's plans during the annual Mobile World Congress in Los Angeles today. She confirmed DOD's plans to release a draft RFP for 5G experi-mentation through the National Spectrum Consortium in early November. DOD will factor responses to the draft RFP into the development of a final solicitation planned for December. But Porter warned the timing of the final RFP will depend on whether an FY-20 defense appropriations bill is passed. The federal government is currently operating under a continuing resolution lasting through Nov. 21.
