The transfer of a Hamilton-class cutter to Vietnam in 2017 was the first major piece of defense equipment sent to the country by the United States, and the ship is "now very active in promoting maritime security," according to Randall Schriver, assistant secretary of defense for Indo-Pacific affairs.
