DOD FORMALIZES POLICY FOR CONTRACTORS' HANDLING OF UNCLASSIFIED INFO

The Pentagon has formalized a policy for contractors who handle sensitive but unclassified information, according to a memo released this summer by the Defense Department's acting chief information officer. On July 31, Cheryl Roby signed a "directive-type" memo (DTM) containing information-security guidelines for protecting unclassified information on non-departmental systems. "It is DOD policy to provide adequate security for all unclassified DOD information on non-DOD information systems," Roby's memo states. "Appropriate requirements shall be incorporated into all contracts, grants, and other legal agreements or understandings with non-DOD entities."
