DOD SAYS IT LIKELY WILL MISS MUNITIONS CLEANUP GOALS FOR BRAC SITES

Contrary to a congressionally mandated goal, the Defense Department predicts it will not have all of its cleanup remedies in place by the end of this fiscal year at Base Realignment and Closure sites contaminated with munitions, according to a new DOD report.rnInstead, the Pentagon projects it will have 72 percent of such remedies in place by then.rnBut, the report states, DOD will nearly meet another congressionally set goal of having all its site inspections (SIs) done at active bases with munitions contaminated sites. The Pentagon projects it will have 98 percent of SIs done at active base munitions sites, and 77 percent of SIs completed at formerly used defense sites (FUDS) with munitions contamination, by the end of FY-10.
