DOD IG Launches Review of Audit-Critical ERPs At Congress' Behest

The Defense Department's inspector general has launched a review of enterprise resource planning systems critical to the Pentagon's audit-readiness goals. The review, requested by Congress, will eye changes in cost of the enterprise resource planning systems (ERPs) during development and implementation and the impact these schedule changes will have on DOD's goal to achieve audit readiness by 2017, according to a bulletin the DOD IG sent Congress this month. The review is also set to look at whether the services' chief management officers and the DOD deputy chief management officer "provided sufficient oversight during development and implementation of the ERP systems," the bulletin states. ERPs are business systems designed to manage an organization's resources and provide support in areas like personnel, finance, health and logistics, among others. ERPs play a critical role in helping the department get audit ready, and many services had pegged their audit-readiness goals to ERP implementation time frames.
