DOD Identifies Investment Areas For Nanotechnology Industrial Base

The Defense Department has identified three key investment areas in the nanomanufacturing industrial base, according to the new annual report released this week by the Pentagon's industrial policy shop. Reducing acquisition costs by enhancing manufacturing technology efforts in "nanoenabled" direct digital manufactures; providing advanced manufacturing technologies for nano-enhanced li-ion batteries in DOD weapons systems; and using nanomaterials in electromagnetic systems for electromagnetic interference shielding and thermal management are the three areas, according to DOD's report to Congress, which is dated September. The report says DOD needs to work with existing nanotechnology businesses and provide them with support in "maturing" the technology, in identifying candidate applications, transitioning nanomaterials and devices into system designs and in devising qualification and testing plans to "validate performance characteristics."
