Defense Secretary Robert Gates has directed military officials to inject millions of dollars into three acquisition efforts urgently needed to save troops' lives by detecting enemy shooters and providing valuable imagery. In a Jan. 26 letter to the congressional defense committees, Gates said he would put $ 115.9 million toward the projects using his authority to rapidly develop and acquire urgently needed supplies to "eliminate a deficiency that has resulted in combat casualties, or is likely to result in combat casualties."
