The V-22 Osprey program is moving ahead with plans to contract with Bell Helicopter Textron and Boeing for nonrecurring engineering work needed to install long-overdue cockpit voice recorders on the Defense Department's fleet of tiltrotor aircraft.In a justification-and-approval notice issued Oct. 2, Naval Air Systems Command said the work would support the development of a capability to record voices and the sounds of aircraft operations. It will "record interphone and radio calls made in and to the aircraft on a digital, crash-survivable device with a continuous loop," as well as "engine and transmission noise," providing "valuable information" to investigators in the case of a mishap, the notice states.
