The Pentagon is about halfway toward its goal of achieving audit-ready statements of its budgetary resources by 2014, Defense Department Comptroller Robert Hale told lawmakers last week. During a House Armed Services oversight and investigations subcommittee hearing last Friday, Hale used a football analogy in response to a query from Rep. Mike Conaway (R-TX) about how far the department has moved toward its goal. "I think we're midfield, but I also think we just got [Redskins quarterback] Robert Griffin III, and we got some momentum on our side," Hale said. "We're crudely halfway there, but we got the ball and we're on the offense." Last year, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta mandated that DOD's general fund statement of budgetary resources be audit ready by 2014. Congress has set a September 2017 deadline for Pentagon audit readiness.
