U.S., Chinese Navies Hold First 2012 Talks On Maritime Safety

U.S. and Chinese naval officials last week held their first maritime-safety meeting of the year in Hawaii, according to U.S. Pacific Command. Representatives from U.S. Pacific Fleet hosted eight officers from China's navy and defense ministry, said PACOM spokesman Lt.Cmdr. Bill Clinton. The working group meeting was conducted in accordance with the 1998 Military Maritime Consultative Agreement (MMCA). Discussions included "safety and security in the maritime environment, maritime search and rescue (SAR), and command/control and SAR communications," he said via email. The discussions resulted in a consensus to propose topics for future working groups; humanitarian assistance and disaster relief; and counter-piracy operations, he said.
