摘要

The United States and Japan have agreed to conditions to move 9,000 Marines off Okinawa and leave about 10,000 on the island, senior Defense and State department officials said April 26 at the Pentagon. Under the agreement, which did not tackle the issue of finding a replacement for the Marine Corps Air Station Futenma on the island, the service will send about 4,700 Marines to Guam and 4,300 to Hawaii, Australia and other locations in the Pacific, and will begin transferring land back to local authorities in the near term. Japan will contribute $3.1 billion in cash to help pay for the relocation to Guam and for joint training ranges the two countries are considering building on either Guam or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
