Hagan: DOD Needs Better Handle On Its Laboratory Infrastructure

The Pentagon should have a better handle on the depth and breadth of its laboratories, the head of the Senate Armed Services emerging threats and capabilities subcommittee told senior defense officials. During a hearing Tuesday on the status of the Defense Department's science and technology enterprise, Sen. Kay Hagan (D-NC) said she was surprised that officials did not have a list of laboratory infrastructure. In response, Zachary Lemnios, the department's chief technology officer, acknowledged that DOD should have that. "We simply don't, and the reason for that is the operating models are different." Lemnios said, noting that, for example, a basic research laboratory is different from an engineering center.
