Carter Strengthens DOD CIO Executive Board To Address IT Issues

Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter is strengthening a senior-level panel led by the Defense Department chief information officer that oversees key IT issues. Carter has released a new charter for the DOD CIO Executive Board to "establish the board's mission as the single senior governance forum to advise the DOD CIO on the full range" of information-related issues, according to his Feb. 12 memo attached to the revised charter. The board's governance functions are "integral to the strategic and operational effectiveness of all" information management, information technology, cybersecurity, information assurance and information resources management systems, Carter writes, calling for the board members to actively participate in supporting the DOD CIO. "My intent is to re-focus and strengthen the DOD CIO Executive Board as an action-oriented forum to address enterprise-wide matters and solutions," Carter writes. He notes that the board should provide "active leadership, guidance and input" into the department's cybersecurity and information-related policies and goals.
