The Pentagon's 2005 base closure and realignment joint basing initiative was a success, helping to save hundreds of millions of dollars above original estimates and already recouping the cost of the realignment, Pentagon acquisition chief Frank Kendall tells lawmakers in a new report. According to the Nov. 6 report, the Pentagon's joint basing efforts to realign 26 "geographically proximate, but separate, installations" into 12 joint bases had a one-time cost of $115 million. "This realignment allowed each joint base to consolidate common functions under a single-process owner and reduce the amount of duplicative organizations, personnel, contracts and equipment," the report states.
