Concerned about the vulnerability of big-ticket U.S. weapon systems to technologically sophisticated asymmetric attacks, the Pentagon's acquisition executive has directed a sweeping look at new defense strategies for countering advanced ballistic and cruse missile threats. Frank Kendall, the under secretary of defense for acquisition, technology and logistics, in May directed the Defense Science Board to form a task force to wrestle with options for offsetting the proliferation of advanced technologies that blunt the effectiveness of U.S. defense systems, including precision guidance, stealth, and electronic warfare systems and advanced missile seekers.
