Japan's defense ministry has asked the Air Force for price and availability information on the Boeing-built KC-46A, an early step in the country's exploration of candidates for new aerial refueling tanker aircraft, according to U.S. government documents and a Japanese defense official. While Tokyo has not yet launched a formal acquisition for the KC-X, Japan's Ministry of Defense wrote the Air Force in February 2013 asking for information about the Boeing-built aircraft, according to the KC-46A Selected Acquisition Report sent to Congress in April. The Air Force's deputy under secretary for international affairs prepared a response that was forwarded to the defense ministry by the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, the report states.
