SECAF Joins Hagel In Planning Review of Russian-Made EELV Engine

The Air Force may review the procurement of Russian-built rocket engines for United Launch Alliance's Atlas V Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle in light of recent events in Ukraine, according to the service's top civilian. Secretary Deborah Lee James said at a March 14 House Armed Services Committee hearing on the fiscal year 2015 budget that she wants to review the supply of RD-180 first-stage rocket engines. The RD-180 is designed and built in Russia through a joint venture between NPO Energomash of Moscow and Aerojet Rocketdyne of Florida - known collectively as RD AMROSS, according to the company's website.
