Analysis Of Options To Modernize LSD Fleet Will Conclude This Spring

An overdue Navy-Marine Corps effort to assess options to modernize the services' aging dock landing ship fleet is expected to be completed in the spring, according to a Navy spokesman. Eying the future of the Navy's amphibious warship program, the Defense Department recently extended the analysis of alternatives (AOA), directing an "affordability deep dive" team to refine and revisit cost estimates for a notional LX(R) amphibious ship replacement program, InsideDefense.com reported in December. The effort was originally slated to wrap up in January. Navy spokesman Lt. Rob Myers told Inside the Navy that the Navy and Marine Corps are evaluating several alternatives that fill capability gaps due to LSD 41/49 class ship retirements, including the Huntington Ingalls Industries-built LPD-17 San Antonio-class amphibious transport docks. "LPD-17 is one of several options that will be evaluated in the [AOA] as we continue to work toward identifying the capabilities needed to meet the requirements," Myers told ITN in a Feb. 6 email.
