CBO Pegs 10-Year Strategic Capabilities Price At $355 Billion

The Congressional Budget Office estimates the cost to maintain and modernize nuclear forces over the next decade will be $355 billion, including $221 billion for Defense Department programs to sustain strategic and tactical strike systems as well as nuclear command, control, communications and early warning systems. In a report published on Dec. 20, CBO assesses the Obama administration's fiscal year 2014 to 2023 nuclear forces blueprint, a decade-long view that accounts only for the early costs of DOD plans to modernize the nuclear triad, which are poised to ramp up later in the 2020s. The report estimates that in FY-14 the nation's total nuclear forces will cost $23.1 billion, including $14.9 billion for the Defense Department and $8.3 billion for the Energy Department's nuclear enterprise.
