The Army is considering providing research and development funding in fiscal years 2017 through 2019 for block 2 of a ground-based, sense-and-avoid system that helps unmanned aircraft systems fly without a visual observer, according to officials leading the effort. Army leadership is expected to make a decision by the end of the fiscal year as to whether it should seek funding for block 2, which would integrate the main displays of the GBSAA system into universal ground control stations at fielded sites, according to Ed Gozdur, product manager for common systems integration.
