Pentagon officials should focus more on how special operations forces can help prevent conflict and shape environments before large scale operations are necessary, a senior defense official said. Speaking Tuesday at a National Defense Industrial Association event in Washington, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict Michael Dumont said the Defense Department has not dedicated enough energy to looking at prevention and shaping operations. Rather, over the last few years, the department has been focused on "getting at the emerging threats that have been popping up," Dumont said, noting that agencies across the government should strive to be more forward looking.
