DARPA seeks ways to protect naval operations from underwater drones

The Pentagon's advanced research arm is seeking industry's input to find ways to protect U.S. naval operations in the open ocean from adversarial unmanned underwater vehicles. According to the Jan. 21 notice on the Federal Business Opportunities website, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency seeks to "identify promising technologies" that could find and negate unmanned underwater vehicles as they potentially pose a threat, and then test these prototype technologies in an underwater test range. The effort "will examine the operational utility and technical feasibility of innovative approaches to defeat emergent threats from unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV)," according to the notice. "The overarching goal is to identify technologies that could potentially exploit adversarial UUV vulnerabilities and to demonstrate innovative approaches to defeat these systems."
