Senate wants annual GAO audit of fledgling sixth-gen fighter aircraft projects

With the Defense Department pressing forward with plans that could launch two new fighter aircraft programs,lawmakers are signaling a strong interest in oversight of the Air Force and Navy next-generation air dominance projects by proposing legislation requiring annual congressional audits of those programs. The Senate Armed Services Committee, in its version of the fiscal year 2018 defense authorization bill, advanced a provision directing the Government Accountability Office to review the expected Air Force and Navy programs. Both services are currently exploring potential materiel solutions to address a requirement for new air dominance capabilities in the 2030 timeframe.
