The president's nominee to lead U.S. Transportation Command said this week that he agrees with the Navy and the current command chief's plan to recapitalize the surge sealift fleet. Army Lt. Gen. Stephen Lyons told the Senate Armed Services Committee in written testimony June 26 that the military and Congress "must take steps now to ensure that we maintain" strategic sealift capacity. "The [Navy] sealift recapitalization strategy addresses near-term needs while establishing a long-term new shipbuilding construction program," Lyons said.
