The House Armed Services Committee today welcomed 16 new members, seven Democrats and nine Republicans. At an organizational hearing today, Chairman Adam Smith (D-WA) pledged to continue the committee's tradition of bipartisanship with Ranking Member Mike Rogers (R-AL). Rogers succeeds former ranking member and chairman Mac Thornberry (R-TX), who retired from Congress. Smith has chaired the committee, which is annually responsible for the massive, must-pass defense authorization bill, since Democrats won a majority in the House in 2018. "It's hard to say exactly, but in the 24 years I've been here, they were two of the more difficult years for the committee in terms of getting our work done in difficult circumstances," he said today.
