Lyons says sealift fleet will start to lose 1M to 2M square feet of capacity per year

Army Gen. Stephen Lyons, chief of U.S. Transportation Command, today quantified the surge sealift crisis he is facing, stating the fleet will lose between 1 million and 2 million square feet of capacity each year starting around 2025. "That's enough space to move two to four brigade combat teams in a single voyage. By the mid-2030s, over half the sealift fleet will be unusable, placing an unacceptable risk on the Joint Force, especially the Army, to deliver large-scale combat power over the ocean," the combatant commander told the Senate Armed Services Committee in written testimony.
