Pulping Of Nonwood Fibrous Material: Practices And Experiences At Century Paper And Board Mills In Pakistan

Century Paper & Board Mills is one of the largest Pulp & Paper board mills in Pakistan. It is located at 67 km Lahore-Multan Road, capital of Punjab province. The main raw materials used are wheat straw, recycled fiber and the pulps imported from abroad. We have also been using River grass (Local name-Kahi grass). The total paper and paperboard production capacity of the mill is 230,000 tons per year. There are seven paper machines producing different varieties of paper and paperboard. The latest one is a multilayer board machine having four online coating stations having a highest board production capacity of 130,000 tons per year. There are two pulping lines with a total capacity of 250 tons a day of unbleached pulp .The line I was commissioned in 1990 with a conventional system of Rotary batch digesters, three washing filters and screening battery .The pulp was bleached in a conventional CEH stages, which has now been modified to HH bleaching sequence. The second line was purchased in 2004 .It has a bleaching capacity of 18,000 tons of air dried pulp per annum, with a provision of four stages of bleaching sequence, which can produce high brightness straw pulp. The mill has a self generation power plant and can produce 25 mega watt of power to meet its utility requirements of steam and electricity. Mill is also using part of its energy requirement from the national grid.
