Entrepreneurship is often regarded as the pulse of a nation's economic heart. The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), an international comparative research project, brings together some of the worid's leading scholars in entrepreneurship to study the complex relationships between entrepreneurship, economic growth, and national prosperity. Initiated in 1999, the programme provides an annual assessment of the level of entrepreneurial activity among different countries. The project has expanded from 10 countries in 1999 to 35 countries in 2005 (Table 1). GEM 2006 will conduct research in 39 countries. Singapore has been participating in the study for six years and the annual GEM Singapore report is conducted by the National University of Singapore Entrepreneurship Centre. The recent GEM 2005 report revealed some interesting information on the country's entrepreneurial performance.
