Java Application Servers Simplify Web Development

The hot spot in Java development isn't the Java language or related programming tools. It's the accompanying application server. Java 2 Enterprise Edition, Enterprise JavaBeans, and XML are key technologies for these development and deployment platforms. Here we review J2EE app servers from BEA Systems, iPlanet, and Sybase. We used BEA's interim WebLogic 5.1 release but also managed to get a look at its recent 6.0 release. In all, the direction in which BEA is moving is worthy of the No. 1 market slot, but we still found a number of gotchas that your development staff will need to watch for.
