When his teenage son showed him the sign-up sheet for a local bowling league, Al Decker, executive director of Electronic Data Systems, an enterprise risk management firm in Piano, Texas, was shocked to see a space requesting his son's Social Security number. "Tell them they don't need that," Decker told his son. But Decker acknowledged that he works with data security every day and sees data from a different perspective. Most parents probably wouldn't have thought twice about filling in the Social Security number. And if Decker didn't drill the idea of security into his children, his son may never have asked whether he should provide that type of personal information.
