Cloud Foundations: Stability Issues in Third-Party Computing Platforms

At 10:21 a.m. PDT on June 6, 2008, the world as we know it stopped. Fortunately, it started again at 12:45 p.m., but it wasn't its old self even then. And then, from 10:03 a.m. to 10:23 a.m. June 9, the world slowed to a crawl. It then recovered, only to falter again from 10:56 a.m. to 11:09 a.m. and stagger from 12:43 p.m. to 1:01 p.m. Dare I say the words? Amazon went down. And all this happened while Amazon representatives were heading toward the dais at the Enterprise 2.0 conference to try to convince large enterprises to divert all, or at least a large share, of their information technology (IT) operations to Amazon's own fluffy cloud, aka Amazon Web Services (AWS).
