As I write this column, my television reception has been out for 3.5 hours. Time-Warner Cable, having taken over ownership a few years ago from Adelphia, decided to upgrade the equipment in the area. Empowered by the new cabling, Time-Warner expects to expand its internet service market and to pounce on the offerings of its new competitors: the telephone companies. Already, promotional materials are floating in promising cheap and wonderful online telephone service, cheap enough and wonderful enough to lure us all away from the phone companies' DSL temptations. Meanwhile, we are watching TV ads for the wonderful HD television and premium movie coverage coming from the telephone companies.
