Although the European Union has been dealing with the seemingly perpetual financial crisis, its member states will have to dip deeper into their pockets if they plan on meeting the European Commission (EC) targets for supplying content to Europeana.This huge online library, which contains texts, audio and visual clips, and images of artifacts, needs more input or Europe's culture faces decline, according to Neelie Kroes, EC vice president for the Digital Agenda. "Europe has probably the world's greatest cultural heritage," she said in a recent statement. It cannot afford to miss the opportunities offered by digitization and face cultural decline.
