When institutions such as the National Institutes of Health announced that digital files of its funded research should be made publicly available, universities needed a platform for disseminating that research to comply with policies while also maintaining control of it, says Mark Hahnel, figshare's founder, figshare worked with experts in the research space to create an updated version of the company's figshare for institutions platform. It serves as a data management portal as well as a data dissemination tool that is built into existing workflows to make information easily shareable, figshare then helps institutions monitor how their data is being used (such as numbers of citations and blog mentions) through partnerships with Altmetric and others. The research space "is really just exploding from output ... which we allow the universities to take control of, and then [have] all these different ways to measure the impact," Hahnel says. "[B]y making all this data available ... academics and the general public will be able to build on top of it, and we should be able to move academia a lot further, faster."
