Next year should see the start of a major British Library (BL) project to digitize hundreds of rare Hebrew manuscripts, paid for by funding from the National Library of Israel (NLI) and the Friedberg Jewish Manuscript Society (FJMS). Ben Sanderson, the BL's head of press and communications, says, "The digitisation project... is due to start in April 2016 ending in March 2019; we cannot provide a date as to when the digitised text will appear online," but "once available the images and relevant metadata will be accessible on the BL's Digitised Manuscripts website as well as on the NLI website." Summaries, or metadata, of the digitized objects will be provided in English. The BL will digitize 860 Hebrew manuscripts in-house and provide the digital images, while the two libraries will share the work of creating the metadata. "The project is being funded by the NLI," says Sanderson.
