Smell, the people who know these things say, is your strongest sense when it comes to memory. And that adds up: Those sugar cookies from even long-distant holidays are pretty much stuck in your head. So is that distinctive aroma emanating from every middle school locker room. For your Field Correspondent, one of the earliest and strongest memories is the smell of cigars trapped in the humidity of the Colorado River bottom in downtown Austin, Texas. It was my first baseball game, featuring the Austin Braves of the Texas League in the early 1960s. We were relatively new to Austin, and my dad probably was curious more than anything else. Somehow, I got to go along. All of the other details are lost in the haze of El Roi Tan cigar smoke, but it launched a long-term interest in baseball, including the minor leagues.
