Introduction to the special issue on multimedia databases

With the proliferation of multimedia data, there is a great need for advanced techniques for effective indexing, searching, and retrieval. To address this need, multimedia database functionality needs to be utilized, and the issues and challenges on system design, implementation, and applications of multimedia databases need to be discussed. The aim of The Second ACM International Workshop on Multimedia Databases (ACM MMDB-2004) is to provide such a forum for researchers to gain technical understanding of new theories and technologies in multimedia databases. ACM MMDB-2004 was held in Arlington, USA, November 13, 2004 in conjunction with The 13th International Conference on Information and Knowledge Management (ACM CIKM 2004). MMDB-2004 included sessions on topics such as Content-Based Retrieval for Multimedia Databases, Multimedia Database Query Processing and Retrieval, Multimedia Data Indexing and Multimedia Data Mining.
