This collection of essays that address challenges to mainstream media delivered in both traditional channels and in a new media environment provides examples of alternative media from a variety of geographic locations, from Malaysia to Chile and Indonesia to California. Cases are also presented that address diverse audiences from gay teenagers and adults to politically disenfranchised populations. The book frames this diverse collection of essays with a general theoretical perspective by editors Nick Couldry and James Curran as well as W. Lance Bennett. To them, theory means "generalized arguments" that open common questions in a variety of locations.
