摘要

USUALLY DURING DISPLAY WEEK, YOU WOULD GET TO experience the look and feel of automotive displays and components firsthand, through impressive mock-ups and exhibits on the show floor. However, COVID-19 led to an atypical year, so naturally some adjustments were required for the conference's move to a virtual format (such as viewing spectacular automotive OLEDs on LCD-based PC or laptop monitors). Still, nearly every aspect of the 2020 event-from the symposium to the Business Conference to the virtual exhibit-offered critical information about the technology and market developments shaping vehicle displays' future. Here, we'll walk through some of the most salient points and recurring themes. Displays are a multibillion-dollar industry, and being attuned to market research and technology trends is essential for making sound business decisions. That's just one reason why the Display Week Business Conference is so successful every year- and this year, it included a special automotive track. Kyle Davis, a senior user interface and experience (UI/UX) automotive analyst at IHS Markit, provided a fascinating presentation on the automotive display market, ranging from instrument clusters over center stack infotainment displays to head-up displays (HUDs). Davis presented data on the global sales of instrument clusters by type plotted over the years (Fig. 1). As you can see, COVID-19 reduces the number of units per year from about 86 million to 68 million. Half of this decline is related to analog clusters, which have no display at all. The units per year may need until 2024 to recover and return to 2019's more robust figures. Fully digital clusters are expected to double their numbers, which is good news for the automotive display industry, although most instrument clusters will remain mixed. According to a revised IHS Markit forecast that factors in the impact of COVID-19 (Fig. 2), center stack displays or central information displays (CID) measuring 5- to 8-inches will see a decrease in the near-term while larger sizes will remain relatively unaffected.
