Each of the top 25 manufacturing centers in the U.S. can spin statistics that show the breadth and depth of the manufacturing activities within its community. But most important, the numbers reflect the hard work that business, civic, and government leaders in each of these metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) have put into making their region among the best. Indeed, if you analyze the top 25 MSAs in the U.S. to see why they've risen to the top, you'll find that even though their key industries may differ, they have much in common. Synergies among businesses. Skilled human resources. Nearby natural resources. An excellent transportation network. But more of that later. What sepa- rates the four Medalist communities in the U.S. from the other U.S. cities in the top 25 is their critical mass. Each— Chicago, Houston, Detroit, and San Jose—has developed a critical mass in at least one industry that helps it retain and attract more manufacturing.
