Why and when to test an induction motor

The committee associated with the development of the American Petroleum Institute's (API) Standard 541, Form-Wound Squirrel Cage Induction Motors - 500 Horsepower and Larger, fourth edition, realizes that many individuals working with this standard may not have experience with or knowledge of motor theory, operation, and testing. For this reason, the standard includes a design guide to assist with the decisionmaking process. This article further addresses the testing requirements of the standard by explaining when and why these tests are required. The sequence of topics in this article follows the paragraph numbering for API 541, fourth edition.
