Live Wire: Women and Brotherhood in the Electrical Industry

Francine Moccio's account of women and brotherhood in the American electrical industrial is a compelling story of pioneering women in one of the most dangerous and closed trades in industrialised society. Moccio presents a case study of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 3 (the most politically powerful local) and the Electrical Contractors' Association which were the 'most powerful brotherhood and contractors' association in the industry today (p. 11). Local 3 has internal stratification between different classes of workers: journeyman (highly skilled labour, apprentices (cheaper, quasi-indentured labour) and traveller (unionised electricians from other parts of the country).
