Researchers suggest that within any culture, men and women, though seemingly speaking the same language, unconsciously weave gender-specific social messages into their communication. Such differences can sometimes get in the way of workplace interactions and lead to inconsistencies and inadvertent inequalities, particularly the large gender disparity found in engineering education and occupations. By focusing on communication differences between men and women - including operating in different cultures, conversational rituals, linguistic styles, tone of voice and body language - employees and managers can help everyone work together more effectively.
