APPLICATION FOCUS: VERTICAL INVENTORY/PATERNOSTER SYSTEMS

Vertical storage systems tightly packed with flammable materials pose a number of major challenges for conventional fire extinguishing systems, which can struggle to reach the source of the fire. However, a fire system manufacturer has come up with a solution after teaming up with vertical storage systems manufacturer Kardex Remstar. Wagner's solution is based around the FirExting gas extinguishing system, which in this case uses nitrogen as the extinguishing gas. As with other FirExting gas extinguishing systems, the extinguishing gas is stored in a battery of nitrogen cylinders sited outside the shuttle or paternoster system. The system's special feature is that the gas is introduced into the protected area over numerous small openings by means of a diffuser pipe. The openings are individually arranged and distributed at different heights within the storage system, with a height of up to 30 metres, so that shelves and other structural components don't obstruct the release of the gas. The result is an equal distribution of the extinguishing gas and effective fire suppression.
