Confidence in textiles: Oeko-Tex Standard 100

The relaxation of textile import quotas from the World Trade Organization has caused a surge in textile and apparel imports from China and other countries into the United States. In January 2005, more than $1.2 billion dollars of textile and apparel items were imported from China—up from $701 million just a year earlier, according to the New York Times. This great increase of imports has U.S. retailers and consumers questioning whether these products are held to the same regulatory and safety requirements as manufacturers abide by in the United States. Proponents of the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 believe that this certification process will not only keep the environment and consumers safe, but also will benefit the textile industry as well as individual companies.
