How operational decisions become critical in effective asset management

Ensuring reliable and cost-effective operations of generators is an important problem in power systems. One of the key factors that impacts this problem is related to generator maintenance scheduling since resulting schedules determine availability and reliability of the generators. Most classical maintenance approaches rely on predetermined time intervals or safety margins for scheduling maintenance. Consequently, these methods often result in excessive or unnecessary maintenance events, especially when designed in a conservative manner. They also do not provide much needed visibility into the actual condition of the generators and thus still experience unexpected failures.
